Raman Base FAQ

1. What is RamanBase?

Raman Base is an open, web-based platform designed for managing, sharing, and analyzing Raman spectroscopic data. It allows users to upload and access spectral data, perform searches by various attributes (including AI-based identification), and contribute to the open exchange of Raman spectroscopy information, similar to how platforms like NCBI and BLAST function for genetic data.

2. Is Raman Base free to use?

Yes, Raman Base is completely free to use. Anyone can browse and search public spectra without registration. However, registration is required to upload data, create personal repositories, and access all functionalities.

3. How do I register for Raman Base?

To register, simply provide a valid email address and create a password. Once registered, you can upload, search, and download public spectra.

4. Can I upload my own Raman spectra?

Yes! Registered users can upload their Raman spectra to Raman Base. You will need to fill out an upload form with the required information, including data format, sample images, and any additional annotations. Each entry will receive a unique identifier for easy reference.

5. How can I control the privacy of my uploaded data?

You can adjust the privacy settings for each spectrum. There are three options: private (visible only to you), searchable (visible in search results but not downloadable) and public (visible and downloadable by others)

6. Can I share or republish data from other users?

You can republish data from other users, but you must obtain permission from the original authors. You can contact them via the DOI associated with the spectra. If the spectra are public domain (without DOI), they are under the Creative Commons license, and you must provide proper attribution.

7. What are the responsibilities of a volunteer in the RamanBase Volunteer Program?

Volunteers assist in developing the platform, including tasks like creating AI tools for spectra analysis. Volunteers are expected to: sttend weekly online meetings, follow instructions from senior staff, contribute based on their expertise and project priorities. Volunteers are not compensated monetarily but can be acknowledged on the website and potentially listed as co-authors in scientific publications.

8. Can I become a co-author of a publication for contributing to Raman Base?

Yes, significant contributors to Raman Base may be acknowledged as co-authors of scientific publications related to the project. Additionally, volunteers can request a certificate verifying their contribution.

9. How can I volunteer for Raman Base?

To join as a volunteer, you need to participate in a short online interview. Afterward, you will be informed if your skills match the project’s needs. Volunteers are expected to accept the terms and conditions and contribute without monetary compensation.

10. Are there any terms and conditions I should be aware of?

Yes, when you volunteer, you must adhere to the Raman Base Volunteer Programs terms and conditions. These cover responsibilities, code access, intellectual property rights, and the ability to leave the program at any time. All volunteers must also follow ethical guidelines and respect the platforms rules.

11. How do I get help or contact the Raman Base team?
